Call for Papers - Fourth Transatlantic Symposium on Sustainable Development: Global Partnerships for Sustainability: Bridging Continents Through Education and Research, University of Murcia, Murcia, Spain, 18th-19th June 2026

The scientific, cultural and diplomatic relations between Europe and its partners in North America are very strong. From a scientific point of view, this long-lasting cooperation has been taking place across a wide range of areas. This also includes the field of sustainability, where North America and Europe are working hand in hand, seeking solutions to the many regional and global problems currently being faced.

Against this background and in order to cater for a wide discussion on the contribution of higher education institutions from both sides of the Atlantic, towards a more sustainable future, the "Transatlantic Symposium on Sustainable Development” series was brought to life. The first event, under the title “North American and European Perspectives on Sustainability in Higher Education" was held at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA, United States, on 2-4 October 2023. The second one was held in Hasselt, Belgium on 10-11 October 2024. The third event was held in Toronto, Canada, on 26-27 June 2025.

This event, the “4th Transatlantic Symposium on Sustainable Development in Higher Education”, will be held in Murcia, Spain, under the theme "Global Partnerships for Sustainability: Bridging Continents Through Education and Research”, with a focus on strengthening transatlantic collaborations to address the SDGs through joint programmes, research, and student exchanges.

European School of Sustainability Science and Research: 100 members mark reached

Founded in October 2018, the European School of Sustainability Science and Research (ESSSR) (www.esssr.eu) has now grown to more than 100 members. It is thus Europe's largest network of universities specifically focusing on research on matters related to sustainable development. Apart from coordinating various research projects in cooperation with its partners, ESSSR is frequently leading a variety of high complex research applications. In addition, ESSSR members are currently undertaking a number of studies, whose results are regularly published in peer-reviewed journals. Dear Colleagues,

Call for Papers for a New Book: Sustainable Development Education- Creative Strategies for Transformative Learning and Sustainable Development Teaching

The global pursuit of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) entails more than just transferring knowledge; it also requires a profound pedagogical shift. It is important that education for Sustainable Development (ESD) be transformed to consider critical thinking, the realisation of systems, and the capacity to make meaningful changes. This forthcoming book, "Sustainable Development Education: Creative Strategies for Transformative Learning and Sustainable Development Teaching", is aimed at gathering novel approaches so as to be different from current models, encouraging learners to feel they can use their ideas and expertise actively. Educators, researchers, curriculum designers, and practitioners of all disciplines and levels of education are welcome to contribute to this book project. The goal of this volume is to be a handbook for practitioners and decision makers committed to weaving sustainability of learning into teaching and learning. It remains open to chapter proposals that will guide new creative/transformative perspectives, including, but not necessarily limited to:

Pedagogical Innovations: Project-based learning, place-based education, participatory action research, and the use of art, storytelling, and drama.
Systems Thinking in Practice: Practical methods of supporting learners with understanding and analyzing complex interrelated socio-ecological systems. Fostering Agency and Action: Case studies of projects connecting learning and community involvement, advocacy, and sustainable citizenship. Integrating Indigenous and Local Knowledge: Approaches that preserve diverse knowledge and knowledge systems as key to sustainability.
Assessment and Evaluation: Novel and innovative measurement tools for evaluation of transformational learning results and behavior changes.
Digital Tools for Sustainability: Effective use of digital technology, virtual exchanges, and digital storytelling in ESD are some ethical and effective ways of managing technology and e-learning activities.

Other themes may be considered, please contact the editorial team if you have any ideas.
The book will be published as part of the World Sustainability Series https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flink.springer.com%2Fseries%2F13384&data=05%7C02%7CTom.Bartlett%40glasgow.ac.uk%7C76ef3724e8e74d50df4308de23c12812%7C6e725c29763a4f5081f22e254f0133c8%7C1%7C0%7C638987509664726381%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=T5SS%2B7YRbjyKJeSb3nFZn9CuQRELNb2tQibmCF9Mq5A%3D&reserved=0 (nearly 100 books and 2 Encyclopedias published to date)  The peer-reviewed nature of the book series -which is Scopus indexed- means that publications produced as part of it have been officially accepted for promotion and tenure purposes over the years, and as validated outputs as part of PhD Programmes.

In total, around 10.000 researchers from over 120 countries have contributed to these books. The peer-reviewed nature of both book series -which are Scopus indexed- means that publications produced as part of them have been officially accepted for promotion and tenure purposes over the years, and as validated outputs as part of PhD Programmes.

We are pleased to invite chapter proposals for two forthcoming academic volumes that explore the critical intersections of two major global challenges: climate change and sustainable development, in a peace context. As we all know, peace is a key component of civilisation and human life. Yet this cornerstone of human advancement is being relentlessly eroded by war, displacement, and environmental catastrophes. Faced with such complex threats, science and scholarship need to engage more than through observation; but by active, collaborative assertion in assembling capable evidence and engaging an interdisciplinary discourse on behalf of peace so that its cause may be promoted in society at-large.

Against this background, these collections aim to document and promote current works on the nexus "peace and sustainable development" and "peace and climate change", and to provide rigorous, interdisciplinary analysis and forward-thinking solutions for scholars, policymakers, and practitioners. Led by Professor Walter Leal, who has an unparalleled publication record in the field of sustainable development- and is Editor-in-Chief of both book series- and an interdisciplinary team of co-editors, the two books are as follows:

Book 1: Climate Change, Social Justice, and Peace: Bridging the Divide for a Livable Future

The climate crisis is not merely an environmental issue but a profound social and geopolitical one, exacerbating existing inequalities and threatening human security and stability worldwide. This book is needed due to the urgent need to consolidate research that explicitly links climate action with social equity and conflict prevention, moving beyond siloed approaches to offer integrated strategies for a just transition.

Possible Themes:

Climate Justice: Theorizing equity, responsibility, and rights in climate governance.

Gender, Climate Change, and Conflict.

Indigenous Knowledge and Practices in Climate Adaptation and Peacebuilding.

Climate-Induced Migration and Displacement: Social and legal protections.

Resource Scarcity (water, land) and the Dynamics of Local Conflict.

The Just Transition: Workforce equity in moving to a green economy.

Urban Climate Resilience and Social Vulnerability.

Climate Finance and Global North-South Inequities.

Youth Climate Movements and their Impact on Social and Political Change.

The Role of International Law in Protecting Climate Refugees.

Book 2: Peace and Sustainable Development: Pathways to a Resilient World

Sustainable Development Goal 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions) is recognised as a central enabler for achieving all other SDGs, highlighting that development without peace is unsustainable, and peace without development is fragile. This book is needed since it will examine the synergies and trade-offs between the peace and development agendas, providing evidence-based frameworks for implementing them in a cohesive and mutually reinforcing manner.

Possible Themes:

SDG 16 as a Cross-Cutting Catalyst for the 2030 Agenda.

Post-Conflict Development and Economic Reconstruction.

Education for Sustainable Development and Peace (ESD+EP).

Governance, Anti-Corruption, and Sustainable Peace.

The Role of the Private Sector in Peacebuilding and Sustainable Economies.

Food Security, Agricultural Development, and Community Stability.

Sustainable Infrastructure in Fragile and Conflict-Affected States.

Public Health Systems as a Foundation for Peaceful Societies.

Cultural Heritage, Identity, and Sustainable Community Development.

Monitoring and Evaluating the Integrated Impact of Peace and Development Programs.

In both cases, other themes may also be considered, so please feel free to make any suggestions.

Submission Guidelines:

Please submit a 300-word abstract, clearly stating the title of the book you wish to submit your abstract to, and a brief biographical statement of yourself and your experience (150 words) to: Raina.Basu@haw-hamburg.de, by 15th December 2025. Full chapters of 6.000-7.000 words will be due by 30th March 2026. All submissions will undergo a peer-review process.

We look forward to receiving your innovative contributions.

Call for Papers - Symposium "Universities as Change Agents in Sustainable Development", Tallinn University, Tallinn, Estonia, 18th-19th March 2026

The global pursuit of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) demands transformative action across all sectors of society. Universities, as hubs of knowledge creation, critical thinking, and future leadership, hold a unique and powerful position. They are not merely institutions of education but are ecosystems capable of driving sustainability through research, teaching, operations, and community engagement.

The Symposium "Universities as Change Agents in Sustainable Development" is based on the belief that the academic sector needs to move beyond siloed initiatives and theoretical discourse to become integrated, proactive, and measurable change agents. The event will serve as a platform for forging new partnerships, and co-creating actionable strategies that leverage the full potential of universities to address the most pressing ecological, social, and economic challenges of our time.

ALED-DN2026 - Discursive panoramas: voices, perspectives, challenges in societies of global crisis (Conference). Registration deadline 31/5/26

This congress aims at bringing together research and reflections that critically analyze discourses that emerge, circulate, and transform in contexts of global crises. Through interdisciplinary approaches, it seeks to explore how different voices—whether institutional, media, academic, artistic, or community-based—shape meanings, construct realities, and dispute narratives about the challenges faced by contemporary societies. The event proposes a space to make diverse perspectives visible, including those traditionally silenced, in order to understand the discursive dynamics that accompany processes of conflict, resistance, exclusion, or social transformation in a world marked by uncertainty and change.

Languaging Crises Conference, Helsinki, March 2026, Call for Papers, Deadline 31/10/25

Conference

Helsinki, Finland

Date: 4/03/2026 - 5/03/2026
Call for papers ending on: 31/10/2025

In a world characterised by the presence of multiple, simultaneous and
overlapping crises, language and communication have an increasingly important
role. For example, in the context of large-scale, societal crises, effective
communication during and about a crisis keeps people calm and informed by
carefully controlling the flow of information, and by providing guidelines
and directions that are understood and accepted by all segments of the
populace.  Similarly, during organisational, political or personal crises of
reputation, language use becomes an essential tool for minimising and
mitigating the effects of the crisis. The different parties involved in the
crisis communicate their own interpretations of the situation, while also
interacting with other affected parties.

The Languaging Crises conference focuses on the ways in which language is
used and abused in crisis situations or the ways in which various crises are
dealt with in different texts. In particular, more research is needed on how
the language used during small- and large-scale crises is targeted at, and
received by, different demographic subsets within heterogeneous societies,
and whether effective communication requires a messaging strategy that takes
those subsets into account in different ways.

The presentation proposals can approach communication and language use during
crises from various perspectives, ranging from linguistics and language
studies to discourse analysis, communication and social studies. They can
also deal with both diachronic and synchronic communication about global and
local crises and examine texts by public figures, the media, organisations or
individuals. The crises investigated may include, but are not limited to, the
following:

health crises, accidents and traumaswars, conflicts and violencenatural
disasters and environmental criseseconomic/financial/political
crisesorganisational crises and reputation crisesinter/personal crises and
life changeshateful and impolite situations
The confirmed keynote speakers are Tony McEnery (Lancaster University), Merja
Koskela (University of Vaasa), Dario Del Fante (University of Ferrara), Heini
Hakosalo (University of Oulu).

The language of the conference is English.
